Margin vs markup
Margin is profit as a share of the price. Markup is profit as a share of your cost. They are not the same number: a 50% markup is a 33% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin.
| Markup | Margin |
|---|---|
| 25% | 20% |
| 33% | 25% |
| 50% | 33% |
| 67% | 40% |
| 100% | 50% |
| 150% | 60% |
How the math works
- Cost = labor + parts + other costs on the job.
- Margin = (price - cost) ÷ price.
- Markup = (price - cost) ÷ cost.
- Price from a target margin = cost ÷ (1 - target margin).
This is the margin on one job before overhead (rent, office, ads). To fold overhead in, use the price per job calculator or the labor rate calculator.
